Søve mines were operated from 1953—1965 in what is today the municipality of Nome. The production created several thousand tons of waste witha content of radioactive substances above the limit of what is currently considered landfillable radioactive waste.

Norwegian Nuclear Decommissioning (NND) is the proposer and responsible for the project “Cleanup and disposal of radioactive waste from Søve mines”. The mission is to locate, dig up and ensure the safe, secure and proper handling of the radioactive waste through placement in a dense concrete structure called a sarcophagus in the project.

Before the measures can start, there must be an adopted detailed regulation and permits. An impact assessment of the chosen methods for cleaning up and proper handling of the waste is required.

The plan program that is now submitted for public review is coordinated with the notification of an assessment program and is therefore referred to as “plan and assessment program”, and is a thorough description of what will be further investigated in the impact assessment. After the planning and assessment programme has been consulted, the consultation input shall be reviewed and the programme adjusted before it shall be determined by the municipal council of the municipality of Nome and the DSA.

Work on the planning programme and impact assessment is carried out by Bergfalle Miljørådgiver AS and the zoning planning work is carried out by Norconsult Norge AS.
